Glug Leeds #6 – Blog

Now we've had a bit of a recoup after the double Glug week during Leeds Digital Festival and the summer is upon us we're gearing up to the next instalment of Glug Leeds 'It's not so Grim up North' at Duke Studios. 

We're going back to our roots with an event showcasing the wonderful talents we have up North so we’ve gathered a line of speakers to talk about why the North is a great place to be living and doing business right now, cause you know what it’s not so Grim up North!


Fred Aldous


After trading in Manchester for almost 130 years Fred Aldous retail outlet for quality arts and crafts materials has crossed the Pennines to help people make anything in Leeds. Paul Walker, MD will be sharing a potted history from Fred Aldous beginnings back in 1886 to date and why they have made the move to branch out over into Leeds now.

Side By Side presents Grimm & Co


There are two sides to Grimm & Co - The Apothecary supplying sorcery services & unnatural products to magical beings and the Yorkshire charity: writing & mentoring centre for children & young people. Dave and Oliver from Side by Side will join us to share the reason they took this fee free contract to create something just a wee bit special in Rotherham.

HackSaw Studio


A small but perfectly formed design studio down in Sheffield generating world class creative across digital and the traditional media disciplines to provide an integrated approach that get you excited about marketing again. When Meadow Hall turned 25 last year, it was local boys Hacksaw they called into design the celebration graphics. Kyle Wilkson founder of Hacksaw will be along to tell how he built an awarding studio in Sheffield and what plans lay ahead for Hacksaw.

Kristyna Baczynski


Kristyna Baczynski is an illustrator, comic book artist and designer. Freelancing from her studio in Leeds she creates books, comics, zines, posters, apparel, stationery and more for a wide range of clients that has included Chipotle, Anorak, The Royal Shakespeare Company, IBM and Etsy. Her illustration work won her a Northern Design Award.

As well as creating her own comics (Hand me Down, A Measure Of Space, Vessel, Vantage), Kristyna has worked with publishers at home and internationally such as Fantagraphics, Image and Sequential. Her comics have been nominated for two British Comic Book Awards and an Eisner.

Ponderosa presents Silvine


Ponderosa will be joining us to talk through how they approached the Leeds based stationers Silvine with a view to make their long forgotten red books relevant for the 21st Century. A true British icon, reinvented - Silvine Originals have been sensitively redesigned, inspired by their British heritage.

For our summer event we like to get onboard with the party vibes so as well as a host of pretty special speakers, Duke’s in-house caterers Grub and Grog will be BBQ’in the Yarden!

After our fabulous speakers we've got the after party with Architects of Paradise vs Ninety Nine crew providing the soundtrack to our summer event, and of course the bar will be open so stick around enjoy a beer or two or three and get stuck into some notworking.
