I couldn't be more excited. Glug Glasgow is finally here! A few months in the making, I'm delighted to launch this new chapter with such an amazing group of talented speakers, certainly part of the Scottish digital marketing elite. I truly hope you enjoy it. 

SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT SOCIAL, IT'S MEDIA. START TREATING IT THAT WAY. 
Social media is no longer just social, is the most important media channel available to marketers. If you have been paying attention over the last two years, you might have noticed that social media has dramatically shifted.  Entrepreneur, Gary Vaynerchuk articulated last year "Social media is just a slang term for the current state of the internet". This is 100% spot on. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Pinterest and YouTube are the networks where billions of consumers spend their time and they are evolving out of being merely social media channels but rather, full-fledged media companies.  In March 2017, Snapchat went public and it's currently valued higher than Delta, Target, Viacom, CBS and Hilton. Social media is no longer "cute". Over 150M users per day are spending minutes and hours in Facebook alone. 

Print, Radio and TV are no longer kings. In fact, TV will be dethroned this year by digital ad spending for the first time in history. Digital moves fast and you can't romanticise advertising. What worked 15 or 5 years ago is irrelevant in today's consumer behaviours. Social media is already the next thing.

How to win in the current digital landscape? Adjust and learn, micro speed and macro patience, follow consumer's attention and give them what they need - you don't have to convince them into buying, if you know where to find them (social media is perfect for this) they will come to you. 

You need to reconfigure your entire understanding of digital marketing. Social media is a goldmine. What once served primarily as a platform to increase sales is now a meeting space, and has become part of the brand experience itself. People's attention is the asset now. This is the greatest cultural shift of our times since the printing press, what exactly are you waiting for?

Gary Birnie – Frame

Gary Birnie heads up digital design and user experience at Frame with 9 years working in the industry. He is a strong believer in the importance of side projects in particular future technology. Some of his most notable projects have been an augmented reality concept for long distance runners, tattoos that communicate with each other and a personalised AR highway signage system.

He is also founder of the Scottish Running Diary.
